Review of TurboTax Premier - CD or Download 2009Pros:- Federal easy and good results, better each year
Cons:- Some glitches with state returns, as usual
"I have used TurboTax for about 15 years. Each year it gets better. I am not the usual simple return guy. I have special situations, including two rental properties. As usual, I had the most difficulty with the state returns. The word Various was considered an error when the date was requested on the state return. (Various is accepted on federal forms.) This was a payroll deduction, not a single donation. As a final glitch, when I tried to e-file both the federal and state, the federal was quickly transmitted and accepted by IRS three hours later. However, the state immediately wanted to ask more questions after I had already paid for e-filing. The response was that I had an error that must be corrected! One of our small W-2's on a part time job had a state tax withholding greater than 20% of the total earnings. The value was correct, because additional witholdings were taken out to cover taxes on other income that had no taxes withheld. As a result, I had to back up and file a paper state return. Why was the question not asked before during the checking process, not after I had paid for e-filing?"

Cons:- you lose touch with the IRS forms
"Turbotax does the work for you, and enables you to make the decisions. It enhances your knowledge in the interview process by asking questions and then responding to your answers. You can stay in touch with what it is doing for you not only with the running total refund always posted for you to monitor, but also by checking the forms themselves every now and then. I am always amazed at the compilation of forms when all is done. I find this year's version especially helpful with my investment portfolio and the proper way to report the losses of 2009."

Cons:- None
"Fifth year of using Turbo-Tax and by far the easiest. Just followed the guidelines for input and for the first time did E-filing. This is a piece of cake system to use and from what I can tell, maximizes any benefits that can be derived from filing taxes. Just assemble the raw data, organize it, add it up then input as directed. You can't go wrong!"

Cons:- advice on investments not straightforward
"I hae used Turbotax for about 10 years. The software is easy to install and use. Each step is clearly explained. The refund (or amount owed) is always visible so you can see effect your entry has on the refund.
If possible,. I would refine the investment section so the explanaitons for the 1099 and 5498 forms are clearer." -
