"This was the 5th consecutive year I've used TurboTax Online.
The 1st time, I compared the preparation pain to personally-prepared paper filing (the previous method of 'choice'), and it was a distinct improvement. In subsequent years - years during which nothing substantively changed in our filing status/personal situation - the standard of comparison became the previous year's TurboTax.
In 2007, I was nearly forced to upgrade my operating system (or, machine), an irksome circumstance. For the 2008 tax year, TurboTax *forced* the use of Win2000, which meant using a friend's computer. So...preparation began with a disgruntled customer.
Particularly grating this year were two items: 1) I never did figure out how to get TT to properly accept/title 2 of 3 royalty properties (something it had never stumbled over in prior years); and 2) TT would not remember some items not likely to change once entered by the user, items it *forced* the user to revisit each time a review of certain sections was necessary. While irritating in itself, using TT for my 2008 returns (even on a friend's broadband connection) was excruciating. Had I been on my land line, I might've seriously considered going postal...or...simply giving up and preparing things by hand again. It was that ugly..."

"Need to be more flexible in changing entries without going back and reanswering same old questions.
I had trouble with HSA distribution, IRA roll over , IRA recharacterization, and a few others. Fill in forms would be easier when changing information and review and compairison with prior years."

"I received a couple of error messages that made no sense at all. If it hadn't been for other users who had contacted someone at Turbo Tax for the same issues and a father who is a CPA, they would have never been deciphered."

"The only thing that irritated me with this software was that it didn't take the cost basis entries for some sales that I had made correctly. I had to do it multiple times for it to work correctly. I think it's a bug that did not get caught in beta testing..."

"as in the past, easy to use, but each year the software becomes more controlling -- i want to be able to look at the "behind the scenes" forms and worksheets. Navigating forms to view, print and save was very difficult.

"This allows you to start and stop as often as you want, recheck what was entered and puts you in control of your situation. If a dividend statement was lost or misplaced and later found it can then be entered before subsission. The best is that it takes you step by step through part of the return and by questions give you what is needed to accurately prepare your return."

"This year's software added the estimated 2007 state income taxes paid in 2008 twice. I had to trick the software to get around this glitch. You provided no way to report this problem - not even by email. The automated chat process was useless for this, and the wait time to call it in was prohibitive. This greatly detracted from an otherwise good product."

"I've been using this product for several years to do my own taxes. It's easy to use and I like the step-by-step instructions and the help/FAQ area. The only draw back is that sometimes the terminology is the same that is used in the tax document and I really need a question asked in English which is common. It's sometimes difficult to understand exactly what they're asking for or intend to ask. Those are isolated experiences though so I would most definitely say go and get this product. There's a different product based on your tax need."

Pros: Lots of help sidebars to explain input required.
"We've used Turbo Tax for four years and it is very straight forward. All I do is put all the Tax documentation in one file folder as they come in the mail and then when I'm ready to due our taxes I organize the papers into categories (bank, mortgage, funds, charities, etc), very simple. Then Turbo Tax guides me through the inputs."
